The perfect substrate for glasshouse soiless culture
The Product
Fytocell is produced from an aminoplast resin, which is mixed with a hardener under a pressure of 5 bars. This results in a light but very stable spongy substance, with a dry matter content of between 10 and 30 Kg / m3, and water absorption capacity of 60% by volume.
Further important features of the resin are that it is harmless to the environment and fully biodegradable.
Fytocell has an open cell structure. These cells are connected to each other creating a good capillary exchange, which results in a uniform water/air ratio throughout the slab.
Fytocell is produced at a low pH, which ensures that it remains stable when low pHs can occur during the growth of the crop e.g. in roses.

Advantages of Fytocell
Ideal water / air ratio in the slab minimum of 35% air at 10 cm water pressure |
Produces plants with a strong rooting system, and numerous root ends, resulting in improved water/nutrient uptake |
Even distribution of water throughout the slab |
Flexibility in slab sizes |
Experience with Fytocell
The yield produced during practical trials, where Fytocell slabs are used alongside other substrates, was at least equal to the yield produced using the growers standard substrate. Trials have been carried out on: -
Tomatoes |
Courgettes |
Peppers |
Roses |
Cucumbers |
Gerberas |
Aubergines |
Cymbidium |
It was evident that the pH and EC in these trials were more stable during the whole cultivation and only seldom were minor corrections to the feed solution required.
