Success with Fytofoam at Doncaster RUFC

One of the pitches at Doncaster Rugby Club was slit injected with Fytofoam on 17th May 2001.

The clubs second pitch had a very compacted surface, which was poorly drained, and had a low moisture holding capacity. This restricted grass growth and gave a very hard playing surface.

It was decided that improved moisture retention, drainage, root aeration and nutrient retention were needed to overcome the problems. Greenscape were therefore asked to slit inject the field with Fytofoam to enhance these qualities.

Using the occasion as a demonstration, interested parties were invited to see the injection process taking place and learn more about how Fytofoam can improve the quality and increase the playing hours of sports pitches.

The Fytofoam, which was injected into slits 15cm apart, is able to hold 60% by volume of water. The foam slits also created channels where excess water can drain through evenly to the drainage layer beneath.

Within 22 days it was evident that the Fytofoam was working. The grass started to grow rapidly and the colour was a much deeper green.

Another benefit of the foam is a softer playing surface. The energy absorption reduces the number of player impact injuries.

The first game of the season was played on Saturday 25th August, and the groundsman, Keith Hudson, has been delighted how the quality of the field has improved. He will be happy to show any interested parties the results.
